Last 46.88 um 16.05h.

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

ManpowerGroup's (MAN) first-quarter profit rose 13% as the temporary-staffing company eked out modest revenue gains ahead of its expectations.

The staffing industry bellwether has seen its revenue grow in recent years as companies' reluctance to hire permanent staff has driven demand for temporary labor.

Still, Manpower has been cautiously optimistic about its prospects, particularly as overall labor demand remains weak in key markets like the U.S.

Manpower reported a profit of $40.2 million, or 50 cents a share, up from a year-earlier profit of $35.7 million, or 43 cents a share. The company in February projected earnings of 30 cents to 38 cents a share for the quarter with a 2-cent per-share impact from foreign currencies.

Revenue edged up 0.5% to $5.1 billion. The company had predicted a roughly 2% decline in revenue.

Revenue from the Americas rose 3.9% in the first quarter, as strength in markets beyond the U.S. helped give the segment a lift. Revenue was up 3% in northern Europe and 0.7% in southern Europe.

The company forecast earnings of 68 cents to 76 cents for the current quarter, bracketing the 74 cents currently expected by analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters.

Shares closed Thursday at $43.77 and were inactive premarket. The stock has risen 22% so far this year.
